Personal Feedback for Fairy Tale Presentation and Picturebook Presentation

Overall Feedback in Class

Each of us learned a lot from the two presentation we gave in this class. We learned different stories, different aspects from the classmates, and various techniques when giving a presentation. For example, Prof. Lee asked us not to stand behind the podium to present,which is a quite necessary training since most of us need to go on the stage and present our essay/project in front of all of our classmates. I also learned many insights in different stories from different people, which is great because with the presentations we've gone through each of us could learn some information out of these amazing stories.

For Nick

1. I think you found very nice and appropriate pictures of the story (The Ugly Duckling), and you put them on the PPT slides with your fluent speech, which made the audience focus more on what you were talking about. But the suggestion is that it will be perfect if you could present without staring at your script.
2. It was really nice to learn that you have strong connection with the story you shared with us. I saw the true emotion of the character in the story with your beautiful performance. It was really amazing to see you performed your tribe's traditional music with the special instrument.

For Jayne

1. In your fairy tale presentation, I think you made clear and delicate slides, and the background pictures made the audience be involved in the story. You not only share the story with us but also provided your insights of the lessons behind, which I think is great.
2. You summarized the story with three key points of the interactions between the tree and the boy in each section and put them in different shapes and colors respectively on the slides. I could tell that you have put much effort preparing the presentation. Although there was a minor mistake on the slide, I think it didn't affect the whole presentation. The only suggestion is that your voice should be more initiative to keep the flow of the story more interesting. 

For Carol

1. You have delivered the story in an appropriate way. And you also gave us good explanations of the symbols in the story as well as the relevant scene of the story on your slides, which are quite impressive. Your speech was very fluent as well.
2. I'm impressed by your performance with the actual picturebook showing to us. You really participated in the presentation this time. The picturebook you shared with us is also interesting!

For Chairs

1. The presentation slides you made were delicate and easy to understand. But it will be more appealing if the summary part could be shorter. Yet, you provided us with a complete conclusion and profound insight, lead the audience to digest the true meaning of the story. 
2. I think you were quite good at producing PPT slides, you can always combine the illustrations and the context properly. I appreciate your ability very much.

For Shelly

1. Although you presented the same topic as Carol's, I really appreciated your explanation and the information of "why the shoes are red". And the "important elements" part is also impressive.

For Ally

1. The story is quite new for me, but with your sharing and the good-looking slides, I learned the profound story. I like you offered different definitions of "love" in your presentation as well as the beautiful insight about the story.
2. The interaction with the audience made the presentation more appealing. I admire your skill which knows how to interact with the people down the stage to catch their attention on your presentation. The delight ambience spice up the presentation and the story.

For Boots

1. I love the design of the your slides. The interaction between the speech and slides were interesting. The intonation of your presentation was appropriate and interesting since you would have nice and impressive expression of different tones for different character. You provided the new knowledge about the origin of the story as well as a real story to the story, making the fairy tale more meaningful. 
2. The slides this time was also interesting. I could tell that you found many resources to search for proper pictures to suit your story. The animation in the PPT slides matched your speech so well, and I indeed appreciate that. 

For Stella

1. The background of the slides fit the story really well. The green color would unconsciously remind the audience of the topic of the presentation. You not only told the story very smoothly and gently but also offered good insights of it. These all proved that you can be a good teacher some day.
2. Again, the simple background of the slides easily catch the audience attention without any interruption. You intonation of delivery was quite fine and gradually guided the audience into your story with clear expressions. 

For Elsie

1. You made beautiful slides and you prepare a video of your story, which is quite good. The first suggestion is that if you could avoid reading the content sentence by sentence, word by word, then your presentation would refine. Second, maybe next time you should notice about the sound from the microphone, so that the audience won't feel annoyed. 
2. You gave us the nice pictures of the story you shared on the slides, which I think is good, because the illustrations would make the audience more immerse in the story itself. But again, if you could tell the story without watching each sentence on the PPT slides, I think it'll be better. But if you tried to tell the story like parents telling night stories to their kids, it's okay to read the lines of the content.

For Jerry

1. I like the way that you made the full scene of the illustrations on the slides, the visual effect is that the audience would feel that they are reading the story book by themselves. It's clever to do so. Your expression on stage was clear as well.
2. You provided the whole story for us in a comfortable way. And you used the same technique on designing your presentation slides, I think it's really appropriate to do so especially teaching children.

Reflection

By Christina's summary, I could know what the story would like to convey. However, I was wondering why it was the last pearl because the pearl could be produced when the angles felt sorrow. For Charis’s story, I agreed with the reflection she gave that everyone instead of the queen was greedy. On the other hand, I regarded the prince was greedy as well while Boots talking about the prince proposed to Rose, who could have diamonds and jewels from her mouth. Her last sentence changed my mind because she said that the prince told Rose that she was the biggest diamond. In addition, Shelly said an important point that stories were written for children so there would be some moral rules or common principles to obey. All in all, each presenter gives me great story as well as the profound reflection.

Comment on the Children Book Presentations

We had 11 presentations on children book last week. There are not only good presentation skills that we can learn from our classmates, but studying from mistakes can also improve our performance. First, I would love to share the strengths of our classmates. 

Preparation were welly done by the outstanding performance. Powerpoint were beautifully crafted. For example, Jerry made a picture book-like Powerpoint. It is undoubtedly very pleasant to read with his explanation in class. Confidence were also shown. For instance, Boots had many hand gestures when she was elaborating her points with example in which it is a mean of fully prepared. Creativity of musical instrument sharing by Nick was another way of showing perfect rehearsal. Not only he combined the picture book with his own personal experience, but also an attractive way to capture the attention of his audience. Therefore, well prepared presentation skills are the power that our classmates has obtained. 

However, there were certain mistakes that need our attention to learn from, which were all minors mistakes on the design of the Powerpoint. Since this class has adopted English as the teaching medium, we should be careful when it comes to explanting ideas for not including Chinese. Boots had put in a Chinese word in her presentation, although it benefited to the clarification of her theory, it is after all an English class. It is suggested that she could translate the word into English and use brackets to include the Chinese word, which is a proper way to indicate the translation. Presenter confused the wording in some case. For Nick, he mentioned that he would give us a summary of his picture book. Yet what he did is telling us the story in detail. Presenters should pay attention to their wording for avoiding confusion of readers.

1.Thank Professor Lee pointed out we should stand on the stage instead of standing in front of the desk.
2.We should keep our Power Point coherently.
3.I thank Christina gave me suggestion that maybe I can just put some key word in the PPT so that I wouldn't too nervous to focus on my slides.
4. I appreciated Nick's presentation. He not only introduced his picture book but perform the traditional instrument on the stage to support his book about music.
5. Joyce used the video to tell us the story was also a good way. It made the story more clear.

In sum, I think all my classmates' presentation are awesome. Everyone's story has own meaning to children.

Comments of my two PPT presentation: fairy tale and picture book

I. Fairy tale
Prof. Lee pointed out that she liked my ending part of the story, for I gave two different versions of ending. It's good to have different of story for everyone to make comparisons between them.

I like what everyone wants to convey through the fairy tale. Those morals are just right and positive, and they did inspire me.

II. Picture book
I got some very useful suggestions from Prof. Lee.
1. If we use bullet points on the PPT, then we need to keep them coherent. Ex: the part of the speech should be the same

2. Stand on the stage not behind the table.
3. Remember the eye contact with the audience.
4. We can dramatize a little bit and take this as a practice.

I also got one compliment from Boots. :) She likes my way of presenting the story: summarizing the story.

I appreciate my peers' presentations a lot. Some of them have good storytelling skills, and some of them use creative ways to present their picture books. :)

Comparison between Perrault and Grimm brothers

    Children literature is the way to “mold” children’s characteristics. It tells them what behaviors are accepted and how to be kind to others. In addition, fairy tales or folktales demonstrate some moral lessons. They are not simply a story for young people but also a medium carrying messages for everyone.

    The comparison between Charlie Perrault and Grimm brothers shows that the writing styles corresponds to their education, living condition, generation they were born in, etc. To begin with, Perrault was born in a middle-class family, working as a lawyer just the same job as his dad did. Without any doubt, he was quite rich and enjoyed relatively higher status during his life. That’s why his writing is full with descriptions of fine clothes, delicate furniture, and luxurious decorations. Besides, his occupation probably leads to his serious writing style compared to Grimm brothers, being meticulous about the detail and logic.

    When it comes to Grimm brothers, they were scholars first and children literature writers second. Since they had been immersed in language related world, they were good at visualize the scene, characters, and making the plot more vivid. Plus, they focus more on rhyme of words. Through Cinderella, readers can find that the birds sending fine clothes read a short rhyme. Therefore, their story would be relatively interesting and tend to intrigue imaginations, which made it more appropriate for children to read. Aside from writing style, they show their considerations for poor people from the story.  

     As for which story I like, I would say that I love Perrault’s Cinderella and Grimm Brothers’ Little Red Cap. First, Perrault’s Cinderella is more independent and optimistic. Through conversation between her and her step-sisters, I consider that Cinderella is humble. She doesn’t blame anyone for her fate, and detest her family, at least not shown in the story. On the flip side, she is not so sorrowful. In Grimms’ version, Cinderella cries a lot, which is the part I don’t like the most. She is too weak and vulnerable. Also, the end of the story shows several bloody scenes which involves with violent and cruelty.

Cinderella in Perrault's version I think she is more naughty. In the party, she wore with great gown, and she sat beside her two sisters in purpose to amuse them. I felt she just like a child.
2.
Grimm Brothers' Cinderella gives Cinderella's mother an important role. In the beginning of the story, she told something to Cinderella. Also, after Cinderella was abused by her step-mother, she went to her grave an prayed. Her mother plays a character of giving Cinderella comfort. However, in Perrault's version, mother just appeared or even didn't appear in the story.
3.
The way how Cinderella gets the pretty dress and other things is also different. In Perratul's version, her godmother did them; in other one, she prayed in front of her mother's grave. It was like her mother helped her.
4.
Godmother reminds Cinderella must come back before midnight or the magic will disappear, but in other version, she didn't get this news.
5.
When her two sisters tried to fit their foot into the shoes, they did something cruel in Grimm Brothers' version.

There are some differences between Charles Perrault and Grimm Brothers.

1. They lived in different eras.(17th century and 18th century) I believe that would also make their fairy tales quite different. Grimm Brothers might go through the industrial revolution; therefore, you may find some fairy tales indicating or reflecting the generation background.

2. They were born into different families and had different jobs. Charles Perrault was raised in a wealthy family, so it is not hard to find that the way he described the home setting and furnish was in middle-class. Also, the story pattern is mainly "from rags to riches".

3. They have different purposes to compile those folk stories. The Grimm brothers wanted to preserve remnants of a rich tradition.

4. In Charles Perrault's stories, generally they have good ends but there are sometimes some horrible plots that make readers impressive.  As for Grimm brothers, they touch ideas and feelings lying near the heart of the human race. In their stories, bad people are often punished.

5. There is one similarity that I find in Charles Perrault and Grimm Brothers fairy tales. Charles Perrault originally wanted to write his stories in the form of verse, but later he used the way his son interpreted the stories to create his fairy tales; therefore, now we can see more children-friendly version of his collection of folk tales. Similarly, Grimm Brothers divided their work into two parts: collecting and composing. The original folk tales they collected might be rough and not suitable for children to read, thus. they need to revise them.

There are mainly two differences in the folktales of Charles Perrault and the brothers Grimm based on the writing style and their influence towards the world of literature. 

Comparing to the brothers Grimm, the work of Perrault has a tone of strange and mysterious. The eerie world is created by magic and fictional creatures such as fairy. For example, in Cinderella, the Little Glass Slipper, Cinderella has a fairy godmother who has the ability to turn pumpkin into a carriage, helping Cinderella to attend the ball. On the other hand, the version of the brothers Grimm, is less eerie. Magic power and fairy godmother are nowhere to be found in their story. White bird, which is commonly found in forest, is taken place and acts as the media for Cinderella to participate in the ball. 

The influence that both folktale giants brought to the world, show a different degree of extension. Since Perrault was one of the ancient authors that recorded fairy tales into written form, he built a foundation of Western children literature, which is indicated by the article on the background of Charles Perrault - "It is often said that the Perrault versions of these tales have become the standard versions in the mind of the general populace". As for the brothers Grimm, they achieved the goal of spreading Western folktales world-wide. Work of the brothers Grimm have been translated into various languages including English and Vietnamese. Not only fairy tales can be told in the Western culture, but also shared in the Eastern world.  

Therefore, the differences between Perrault and the brothers Grimm can be measured in the perspective of writing style and their influence.

The difference of fairy tale and folktale:

1. Fairy tale is usually full of fairies, talking animals, and magic; whereas folktale is the passed down stories about people and their lives by ascendants.
2. Fairy tales are often written fictions, whereas folktale orally passed by generations.

One folktale can be written in many forms stories. Form the original story of Little Red Riding Hood, the little girl called neither “little red riding hood” nor “little red cap”. The wolf goes to her grandmother’s house, eats her up, and fills the bottle with grandmothers’ flesh and blood. When the girls comes, the wolf even asks her to drink her grandmothers’ blood and eat the flesh. In addition, the wolf order that she take off her clothes piece by piece and sleep with him. At the moment, the girls feels something wrong, and she outwits the wolf, asking for going out. From the original story we can find that it is quite realistic and unrealistic at the same time. In the world we live now, the wolf cannot speak; however, the bloody, brutal crime happens every seconds, and girls sexual abuse also occurs in every corner of the world. I think that children might learn a lot from the Grimms version of story. As an adult, we learn more from the original one. We can see killing people and sexual assault is a long history problem. As we acknowledge ourselves a developed or civilized country, we still never stop these kind of things from happening. With the comparison between Perrault’s and Brothers Grimm’s version, the biggest difference is the ending. Perrault’s ends with sadness; Brothers Grimm’s has a happy ending.

My version of Little Red Ridding Hood

In Taipei city, a pair of twin girls called little red ridding hoods is so famous that everyone in the city knows them. Their mom releases their dancing video on Youtube before they know it will become a big hit. From then on, they are invited to many TV shows and will always be recognized by side walkers and strangers. One day, their grandma is too sick to take care of herself, so little red ridding hoods’ mom go to help their grandma. However, their mom forgets to bring medicine and bird’s net. She asks twins to bring them to grandma house. When they are heading for the house, a evil-hearted woman recognized them and start thinking about kidnapping these two little girls for ransom. She greets them and says “ hey cuties, I know you, don’t recognize me? I’m photographer in Tv shows!.” Both are confused because they never forget anyone’s face. “A mistake must be made or this is a terriblely designed fraud!!” these two murmured. Smart as they are, they asked her if the woman can go to grandma’s house with them. Absolutely, she agrees. She thinks that she wins their trust and has a chance to kipnap them; however, the little red riding hoods bring her a police office. The woman realizes the truth too late to escape. The little girls shout “Kidnapping! Kidnapping!” outside the office. Soon, the evil woman is immediately caught by police. The police priase two little girls, sends them to their grandma’s house safely, and tell their mom how smart and smart they are!

Charles Perrault: His Little Red Riding Hood is simple to follow. The spot moves quickly, and the story is trying to tell some life lessons. It feels like his adaptions are more in reality.
Background: he is a lawyer, in 1687 long poem attacking classical writers in comparison to moderns.
1694, three verse tales well received and he became a standard of fairy tales. He destroyed the anticipation of success of LRRH.

Grim Brothers: His LRRH is more descriptive than Charles's edition. He gave the wolf more OS to make it vivid and has his thoughts about LRRH. The ending is appropriate for children.
Their stories stayed closet to natures like stars, suns, moons, animals and so on. They believed the stories to be fragments of grand old myths. They collected folktales from among neighbors and relatives, so their stories had heard circulated their lives.

Jayne's adaption of LRRH

Once upon a time, in the depth of dense forest lived a wolf family. In the family, Gray was the youngest wolf. Told from the ancestors, he was taught that humans were dangerous because they set traps to catch them and used weapons to shoot or kill them. Therefore, every time when Gray was outside, he would look around at first to check whether the place was safe or not. One day, he was chasing after a deer. However, it was not until the deer disappeared did he perceive that the scene in his eye was no longer a variety of shrubs and trees but a house with chimney. A whimper given from a dog drawing Gray’s attention, he saw one of the dog’s legs was broken. Then, a little girl who wore a red hood rushed to appease the dog. Meanwhile, a woman who carried a box was reaching them. For a while, the dog not only stopped moan but also stood up. Gray felt amazed by what he had seen. In addition, he began to rethink about humans “Are they dangerous or kind?” This doubt remained until his mother was injured by the traps. What came up to his mind were the girl and woman. Although they were humans as well, they were who could come to the rescue. Gray then sought out the house in his memory. Standing by the fence, his arrival made the motion that the girl played with the dog suddenly stopped. The girl called Little Red Riding Hood looked at him and said to the dog with a smile “We have another friend to join with us!” Surprisingly, LRRH was not scared by his appearance but welcomed his coming. Her kindness let Gray decide to give it a try, taking humans to their habitat for saving his mother. After he mentioned his purpose in coming, LRRH turned to her mother for help. Her mother, who was actually a vet, had already introduced various animals to LRRH and even some had visited their house as patients. Thus, it was one of the reasons that LRRH did not frighten by Gray; as for another, it was because Gray looked like a big dog. With LRRH and her mother’s company, Gray led them to the destination. Gary’s mother, critically painful with a little breath, was finally free from the trap thanks to the vet. The bloody wound stung all of them. Gray said “Why some of humans put us to death while some of them rescue us from death?” LRRH’s mother made a sigh and replied “Well, humans are not powerful than wolves so they choose to kill them initially. At the preemptive position, humans would not be afraid of attack from wolves. In terms of the traps, owing to the warmness of wolf pelt is so valuable that people want to fetch. On the other hand, I protest against the behavior done by those people because I believe wolves own their habitat to exist” Air flowing merely with silence for a moment, LRRH then said “I would be the person like my mother and I would protect the existence of animals and promote others to consent me.” Few years passed, Gray had grown into a mature wolf and LRRH had come of age as well. During the years, LRRH usually sent food to Gray and his family. Now, LRRH was a zookeeper and divided the dense forests as conservation for wolves.
